TThreadSumUp

Guide

Setting up Thread

Everything a new team member needs to take Thread from empty to running the shop. Work through it in order — each step builds on the last.

Thread turns till sales into stock movement. You describe what you sell and what each sale consumes, and Thread does the arithmetic: what is left on hand, how fast it is going, when to reorder, and how much of it you are losing.

  • Consumables are the things you buy and use up — beans, oat milk, cups, A5 notebooks, till roll.
  • Items are the things you sell. Each item has a recipe: the list of consumables one sale draws down.
  • Modifiers are variations of an item — oat instead of dairy, an extra syrup pump. They either add consumables or swap one for another.
  • Suppliers own the lead time and the pack size, which is what makes a reorder point meaningful.
  • Locations separate the floor from storage so a stock take can be counted where the stock actually sits.
The whole platform hangs off recipes. If a recipe is wrong, everything downstream — cover days, reorder quantities, margin, wastage — is wrong in the same direction. Time spent getting recipes right is the highest-value setup work you will do.

Each step depends on the one before it. Work top to bottom and nothing will be blocked waiting on a record that does not exist yet.

  1. 1Name the business and build your locations.
  2. 2Add suppliers, with lead times and delivery charges.
  3. 3Add consumables and attach each one to a supplier.
  4. 4Add items and write their recipes.
  5. 5Add modifier groups and attach them to items.
  6. 6Connect the till (or import a sales CSV) so real demand starts flowing.
  7. 7Do a first full stock take to set your opening balances.
  8. 8Run your first reorder and follow it through the order pipeline.
There is a live checklist that mirrors these steps and ticks itself off as you go. Open Setup and start from the onboarding panel at the top.
